ACT I

Setting: Classroom

Introduction: The group of friends was returning from the gymnastics competition. Sara was very upset.

Daniel: You did very well Ana, you won the competition cleanly.

Ana: (Smiling happily) Thank you Daniel, I practiced a lot, I want to go far.

Sara: (annoyed) You were just lucky. You can’t go farther than me, I’m the state champion.

Bertha: Why not, if she tries hard she can go as far or farther than you, Sara?

Sara: (looking angrily at Bertha) What are you talking about? Nobody can be like me, not even if they practice all their lives, they can be half of what I am.

Daniel: (Disappointed of what he was hearing) I can’t believe what you are saying Sara. Ana is your friend, you should be happy to see her advancing so fast.

Ana: (Trying to lower her spirits) You don’t have to fight about it. I want to be good and I won’t stop practicing until I get there. I’m not trying to compete with you Sara.

Sara: (feeling attacked) But I am. I am going to prove to you that I am the best and that you can’t compare yourself to me. You must always be behind me, I am the best and being my friend does not give you the power to surpass me. I’m doing you the favor of letting you be part of our friends.

Bryan: (not believing what his sister was saying) Sara that’s not so. Sister, why are you talking to your best friend like that? You are friends, not rivals.

Sara: We were friends, I don’t want to be with someone who out of envy wants to take my place.

Bertha: Nobody is taking your place Sara, we all have our own space and friendship is worth much more than a first place in a championship.

Sara: (Starting to walk away) It will be worth a lot to you. I don’t want to be friends with such envious people.

Sara leaves the scene and the others shrug their shoulders and go out the other way.

ACT II

Setting: Classroom

Introduction: The group of friends except for Sara are chatting and laughing animatedly, when she enters the classroom.

Sara: (looking at the floor and in a very calm tone) Friends, can I talk to you?

Bryan: (in a warning tone) Sis, don’t come to bother the group, we are very well since you are not part of our friends.

Bertha: That’s not true Bryan. Everyone has a place and Sara is as much needed as any of us. What do you want Sara?

Sara: (Sorrowful) To apologize. These days without you I realized that being a gymnastics star doesn’t fulfill me if I can’t share the triumph with my friends. And if I had to choose between being appreciated by you, or being number one, I would choose you, will you forgive me Ana?

Ana: (approaching Sara and taking her hand) Of course I forgive you, do you think I am your rival? No Sara, I’m your friend and I wouldn’t put our friendship above anything, we can be friends for life, Gymnastics may not last forever. Give me a hug.

Sara hesitated a little

Daniel: Okay! come on, hug her, you are great friends.

Sara: (hugging Ana) Sorry Ana. I want to be your friend, not your rival. We can all shine at the same time, you are not taking my place, you are earning yours.

Ana: (hugging her smiling) Of course I forgive you friend, friendship has no limit.

The rest of the friends join the hug, smiling happily.

THE END.
