ACT I

Setting: Dining room of the house.

Introduction: Kate is on the phone while they both eat lunch, not looking at her mother, only at the cell phone screen.

Agnes (speaking animatedly): You won’t believe what I bought at the market. I found a great deal on dresses made from recycled fabric. You’re going to love them!

Kate (murmurs without taking her eyes off her cell phone): That’s great! More scouring pads for my closet.

Agnes (raising her voice in disgust): Look at my face while we are talking! Those are rules of the good speaker and good listener. Scouring pad is what you should use to wash the dishes like I ask you to and you never do.

Kate (looking at her mother with annoyance): Why should I wash the dishes? That’s called slavery.

Agnes (Shaking her head disapprovingly): It’s not slavery, daughter, it’s responsibility. If you want to have rights, you must fulfill your duties.

Kate (saying ironically): Your duty is to dress me and I’ve been asking you for months for a pair of pants from the corner store. But what you bring me are dresses made of fabric that nobody knows where they came from.

Agnes (disappointed): How ungrateful you are! You know very well that we don’t have the resources to splurge on good brand name clothes, even so I make the effort to always buy you nice things that are within our budget. Of course I fulfill my duties as a mother and therefore I have every right to demand that you fulfill yours.

Kate (with an annoyed expression): As you say mother.

Agnes (getting up from the table): Go study, do your homework before 4:00 in the afternoon, remember that you have to go to your grandmother’s house to take her medicine and it is better to wait for them to wait for you.

Kate (yawning): But mom, the teacher never checks the homework, she only sends it to bother you.

Agnes: It doesn’t matter if she doesn’t check them, you must study if you want to be successful in the future. A good profession will help you get the best job, so you will have a lot of money and you will be able to buy everything I can’t give you.

She picks up the dishes, wipes a tear that wants to come out of her eyes and walks away sadly.

ACT II

Setting: Office with a desk and two chairs. Waiting room with a chair

Introduction: Now grown up, Kate is in the waiting room with documents in her hands. Magnus arrives and is surprised to see her.

Magnus (looks at his watch): Good morning. Are you here for the job interview?

Kate (stands up and shakes Magnus’s hand): Yes, it’s a pleasure, I’m Kate.

Magnus (points to his office and lets her in): I’m Magnus. It’s still a little early, I had scheduled the interviews for 8:30.

Kate (Responding proudly): It’s better to wait than to be expected.

Magnus: Excellent way of thinking, in our company we reward punctuality. Please allow me to read your resume.

Kate (handing over the documents she had in her hands): Here is my resume, and these are certificates of the courses I have taken.

Magnus (Astonished while reading): You are a very prepared girl, you seem to be very qualified for the job.

Kate: Studies are important for success.

Magnus (with a smile): I agree. We are looking for someone to organize our archives, but according to your studies you deserve a better position. Would you be interested in working with us in the economic area? You would have many benefits, all the rights that by law are given to our workers.

Kate (enthusiastic): Of course! What would my duties be?

Kate’s phone rings, she puts it on silent and looks at Magnus again.

Magnus: Aren’t you going to answer?

Kate: Not now, I’m talking to you.

Magnus (takes a form and hands it to Kate): Here you will see the duties and rights of employment. Read it, sign it and start on Monday. My congratulations and admiration to the university that formed such a prepared and educated girl.

Kate (with a huge smile): The university only taught me theories. All my education comes from home. Congratulations and my total admiration goes to my mother.
