Title: “Building step by step”.
Author: Silvina Carrasco
Characters:
- Manuel: Young man in his twenties. He dreams of working as an advertising creative in a big beverage company called Amusant.
- Chano: Young man in his twenties. He dreams of working as an advertising creative in a big beverage company called Amusant.
- Extras: They walk down the street and/or look at store windows in Act II.
From act to act the appearance of the protagonists will vary; considering that each one takes place years after the previous one.
ACT I
Characters that take part in this act: Manuel and Chano.
Scenario: The table of a café.
(The young people have a drink/soda/refreshment).
-Chano: Did you see the last Amusant advertisement?
-Manuel: Yes, it’s very good.
-Chano: I never get tired of saying it, what a great job as an advertiser!
-Manuel: And who’s to say, maybe one day we will be doing the advertising campaigns for all the company’s brands.
-Chano: Cheers to that! I’m sure that’s my future, I’m a born creative, I was born for that.
(The young people toast with their drinks)
-Manuel: I am going to start wherever I can. I heard they are looking for a cadet/messenger and I’m going to bring my resume, maybe I’ll get lucky. You could bring it too.
-Chano: Ah, no, no, don’t start at the bottom either. I know that my ideas are out of the ordinary and as soon as the opportunity as a creative comes up I’ll present myself and I know I’ll stay, I have a strong feeling.
-Manuel: Mmm, well, good for you for believing in those great opportunities.
-Chano: (With a touch of irony) Good luck to you with the cadet job.
ACT II
Characters taking part in this act: Manuel, Chano and Extras.
Scenery: A street with shop windows and some flowerbeds with plants.
The extras walk along the sidewalk and/or look at shop windows. Manuel and Chano are walking in opposite directions; they cross each other in the middle of the sidewalk and stand talking.
-Chano: Manu!
-Manuel: Chanito! It’s been a long time!
(They greet each other)
-Manuel: How long has it been?
-Chano: Oh, a lot, about six years! What’s your life like?
-Manuel: Working at Amusant.
-Chano: You started as a cadet?!
-Manuel: Yes, but after five years as a cadet I got a better position as an assistant. Now I do the job that the creative people don’t want to do: it’s not the goal achieved, but step by step I’m getting closer.
-Chano: It’s good that you take it that way, for me five years as a cadet is a lot of sacrifice for a position as an assistant, I don’t think it’s worth the sacrifice.
-Manuel: Maybe, but it allowed me to meet people from the company and it has given me time to study some advertising… What have you been doing?
-Chano: Me?… Heee… Not much, but I don’t worry, I know I was born to work as a publicist and I’m still waiting for my big opportunity, I’m sure it will come!
ACT III
Characters taking part in this act: Manuel and Chano
Scene: The table of a café.
(Manuel is working on his laptop. Chano enters and approaches him)
Chano: Manu?
-Manuel: Chano! How are you?
(They greet each other)
-Chano: I wasn’t sure if it was you. How have you been, so long?
-Manuel: Very well! You won’t believe me when I tell you: you’re talking to one of Amusant’s advertising creatives.
-Chano: Really?!
-Manuel: Yes, after ten years of working in different positions in the company I gained the confidence of the directors and when an advertising position became vacant they suggested me to apply and I did!… It took a while, but it came… What are you doing?
-Chano: Me? (Not so convinced anymore) Me, I’m waiting for my big opportunity.
