ACT I

(Characters that intervene in this act Luis, Luis’ mother and Veronica)

Luis sits at the kitchen table, finishing his breakfast while his mother looks in her purse.

LUIS’ MOTHER: Where is it, where did I put it? Luis, you’ve seen it?

LUIS: What?

LUIS’ MOTHER: My cell phone.

LUIS: No idea. I’m sure you left it in the room.

Luis’ mother leaves the room, leaving the bag open. Luis stealthily approaches the bag and searches inside until he finds a pack of cigarettes, looks both ways and takes out a cigarette that he puts in his pants pocket. Veronica enters and startles Luis, who turns abruptly.

LUIS: Fuck, Veronica, you scared the shit out of me.

VERONICA: What are you hiding?

LUIS: Shh! Quiet, my mother will hear you.

Luis takes out the cigarette he’s hiding in his pants and shows it to Veronica.

VERONICA: A cigarette?

LUIS: Yes, but speak softly, my mother can hear you.

VERONICA: What are you going to do with it?

LUIS: What do you think?

VERONICA: Are you going to smoke it?

LUIS: Sure. At break time, between classes. Now be quiet, my mother can come right away.

Luis’ mother enters the kitchen. Luis quickly hides his cigarette in his pocket.

LUIS’ MOTHER: Oh, hello Veronica, are you ready now? Well, come on, if we don’t leave now, you’re going to be late.

Luis, Luis’ mother and Veronica leave the kitchen.

ACT II

(Characters that intervene in this act Luis, Veronica and Victor)

In a corner of the schoolyard, Luis, leaning against the wall, lights his cigarette, together with Veronica.

VERONICA: Don’t come near me while you’re smoking that.

LUIS: Are you sure, because it’s great for me.

VERONICA: Yes? Let’s see, what does the cigarette do to you, besides it smells terrible.

LUIS: Nonsense, it smells like an adult. It smells like a man.

Luis smiles.

VERÓNICA: Well, it smells awful to me, besides the smoke irritates my eyes.

Luis inhales the smoke from his cigarette. Victor very seriously approaches the corner where Luis and Veronica are.

LUIS: Hey Victor, do you want to smoke?

VICTOR: No.

VERONICA: See, Luis? Victor is smarter and doesn’t want to do that either…

LUIS: Well, then, Victor is another sucker like you, hahaha.

Victor impetuously approaches Luis and slaps him, throwing his cigarette to the ground.

VICTOR: Shut up, you idiot.

VERÓNICA: But Víctor….

Victor runs off, leaving Luis with a pale face.

LUIS: But…

VERONICA: I’m sure something’s happened to Victor.

LUIS: Well, it’s not going to stay that way. Victor has to pay for it.

VERONICA: Don’t hold it against him, Luis, I’m sure something’s happened to him.

ACT III

(Characters intervening in this act Luis, Victor’s father and Victor)

Entrance to Victor’s house. Luis waits at the entrance, rings the doorbell.

LUIS: Victor is going to find out, how dare he slap me in front of Veronica.

Victor’s father opens the door, holding in one hand a cart with a small oxygen cylinder attached to a mask on his face.

VICTOR’S FATHER (Between coughs): Hello Luis, Victor is coming down now. (Still coughing) Victor is coming down, Luis is at the door.

LUIS: Are you all right?

VICTOR’S FATHER: Yes, son, yes, it’s just that when I move I get tired right away and I get a cough, I’m sorry.

Victor’s father enters the house, Victor appears a few seconds later.

VICTOR: What?

LUIS: Sorry, Victor, I didn’t know anything about your father.

VICTOR: Do you understand now?

LUIS: Yes.

VICTOR: You understand how angry I was when I saw you with that nonsense about the cigarette and that you laughed on top of that.

LUIS: Yes, Victor. It was stupid.

Luis hugs Victor.
