SINGLE ACT

Daniel (with an air of superiority): That’s the last straw, now you also bring the new kid to compete with me. You two have no idea what good training is, my coach is the best, he has prepared me to defeat the enemy and always be the best.

Alfredo (somewhat surprised): The best? If I’m not mistaken the best runner in the school until today is me Daniel, and we are not enemies, we are just competing in a healthy way. Exercise is not a war, it is health and distraction, you are not my enemies.

Daniel: Well, you are my enemies and I’m going to beat you today so you’ll have to shut your mouths until the next competition, where I’ll also beat you, obviously.

Henry (speaking while he adjusts his shoe): Just because I’m new doesn’t mean I don’t know how to run or that I’m not prepared Daniel, and I think the same as Alfredo, this is not a thing of enemies, if I don’t win, I don’t care, I came to participate, compete and to meet you who will be my companions from now on.

Daniel (laughing in a mocking tone): How nice all that sounds, but I want to see you in the competition if you have to choose between being friends or winning, what would you do?

They announce that the competition is about to begin and the boys stop talking to take their places, while they do so, Henry and Alfredo give each other a smile and Henry makes a sign that everything is fine with his finger, and turning to Daniel he speaks to him.

Henry: Good luck my friend.

Daniel (in a disdainful tone): You’re going to need it again.

The race begins and everyone gives their best, Alfredo and Henry go side by side at the head of the race but suddenly they see Daniel stumble and fall, they both stop and without thinking they go back to help Daniel.

Henry (Concerned): I think he’s hurt are you in a lot of pain?

Daniel (complaining in pain): Yes it hurts, but I have to win, I have to get up and run.

Alfredo (Trying to straighten the boy’s leg): You can’t run like that, but I see it’s very important for you, help is coming, but they won’t let you run, I have an idea, Henry, help me lift him up.

Both boys take Daniel by the arms making him lean on them and instead of going towards the help, they start walking towards the finish line, the three of them at the same pace, helping Daniel to hold on until they cross the finish line all at the same time, placing Daniel on the ground and high-fiving Alfredo and Henry.

Henry (Addressing Daniel): This year there is no winner, but winners, all three of us crossed the finish line at the same time, you just won the race Daniel.

Daniel (Not understanding much): Why did you do it? It was a competition.

Alfredo (Sitting next to him): It was a healthy competition between three friends, and one friend needed help. Learn something Daniel, there is no competition or trophy that is more important than a friend.

Henry (Nodding): That’s right and we compete with you, but we are your friends.

Daniel (With a shy smile on his lips): I had to break an ankle to understand that, but I learned my lesson will you help me raise friends?

The three boys smile, Alfredo and Henry help Daniel up and start walking out of the arena.
