SINGLE ACT
Setting: amusement park, where there is a hiring office.
Introduction: 4 girls decide to apply for a job in a park that has just arrived in town, only one of them knows the job, but they decide to make a bet to see who gets hired.
Paula (very excited): Well, we are here, now we are going to do something, each one will do the interview with the owner of the park and the one who gets the job wins.
Milagros (sitting on a bench): I don’t think it’s fair, you are the only one with experience, it’s an unfair bet.
Dora (walking very confidently in front of Milagros): Milagros, stop being afraid, when you want it you can, let’s do it, what’s the worst that can happen? That they tell us no? Anyway, there is only one job and three of us will be left without it, so take it as a challenge and that’s it.
Carmen (waving her hands above her head to dispel doubts): Okay, okay, okay, already, let’s do it, it’s time to show what each of us has and which of our qualities is the one that attracts the most attention. Maybe it’s Paula’s knowledge or Milagros’ fear of everything, maybe it’s Dora’s great self-esteem or my relaxed and happy personality… let’s put our personalities into play as if it were a super power.
Dora (laughing at Carmen’s witticism): Ok, who will be first?
Carmen (determined): I will, wish me luck.
Carmen enters the office, where the owner of the park is sitting at a desk.
Carmen (standing in front of the desk): Good morning, I’m Carmen and I’m here for the job you are offering.
Park owner (showing the seat): Sit down miss, I’m going to ask you some questions and after finishing the interviews we will make the selection.
Carmen (taking a seat): Thank you, you say?
Park owner (taking the seat, he begins to ask): Do you have any experience in the job? Do you know how to deal with the public? Work under pressure? Why do you think you are the ideal person for the job?
Carmen (answering with a friendly smile): I don’t really have experience, I have good people skills, I don’t really like pressure, but I can try and I think I am the ideal person for the job, because I am intelligent and very cheerful, and this is a park, you have to be cheerful.
Park owner (smiling kindly): Very well, Miss, wait, at the end of the interview we will make the selection.
Carmen gets up and leaves the office, at the same time she signals Milagros to come in.
Milagros (without looking up from the floor): Hello….
Park owner (trying to rush the interview): Good morning, take a seat, I will ask you a few questions and at the end we will make the decision, do you have any experience in the job? Do you know how to deal with the public? Work under pressure? Why do you think you are the ideal person for the job?
Milagros (still looking down and rubbing her hands together): I have no experience, I have never worked, I am introverted, I don’t communicate much with people, they don’t like me. Can I work under pressure? I live under pressure day by day, and I think I can do the job because I am responsible and obedient.
Park owner (not very convinced): Well, we’ll study your answers and at the end we’ll let you know.
As Miracles leaves, Paula enters with a smile on her lips and thinking that the bet is already won for her.
Park owner (even more hurried): Have a seat and let’s get to the point, the questions are: Do you have any experience in the job? Do you know how to deal with the public? Work under pressure? Why do you think you are the ideal person for the job?
Paula (smiling and taking her seat): I have experience, I have worked in something similar before, I deal with the public very well and I am the ideal person because I don’t have to be trained I already know what to do.
Park owner: Very well send in the last lady and then we will make the decision.
Paula walks to the door and ushers Dora in.
Dora (with her head held high, walking very confidently): Good morning, may I sit down?
Park owner (showing the seat): Sure Miss, have a seat, I will ask you a few questions and the decision we make depends on them. Do you have any experience in the job? Do you know how to deal with the public? Work under pressure? Why do you think you are the ideal person for the position?
Dora (approaching a little to the edge of the desk): Sir, I am going to be very honest with you, I have no experience in the job but I can learn everything I put my mind to, I can deal with the public, be friendly and make them feel good. I can work under pressure because I trust myself and I know that I can achieve what I set out to do and that makes me the ideal person for the job. I believe in myself, I trust in my ability and I think you will give me the opportunity to develop in this new job.
Park owner (surprised with Dora’s answers): I think I have already made my decision, the job is yours, I will not miss the opportunity to have someone so confident and with such a high self-esteem, people like that are capable of achieving anything in life, congratulations!
Dora leaves the office very happy, hugging her friends and celebrating with them that her self-esteem and confidence had won her the job and the bet.
