SINGLE ACT

SCENE
White and dark blue police interrogation room completely closed with only one entrance and exit door.

(Two men sit facing each other on chairs with a brown table in between)

POLICE: Now tell me, who was it?

MAN: (Indifferent) Of what?

POLICE: Come on! Don’t play dumb with me, sir.

MAN: (Distracted in the ceiling lights) I really don’t know why you brought me back to this boring room. Look at it! It’s monotonous.

POLICE: Do you think I have all the time in the world?

MAN: Well, I guess you do. There’s a reason you’re here asking me about this case. (Stares into the POLICEMAN’S eyes) Could it be that he’s too much of an influence on you, sir?

POLICEMAN: What do you know?

MAN: The same as you. That the owner of FUCEM was murdered in a dark forest outside the city.

POLICE: I’m looking for clues, sir! Clues! Can you be a little more specific as to where that happened?

MAN: (With his index finger he points to his chest) Me? I have to tell you where the place is? (Emphasizes with irony)

POLICE: (Preoccupied with his gaze towards the upper corner of the room where a security camera is located, he pretends to answer with affirmation) Yes! You!

MAN: (With his smiling face) Don’t worry about who’s watching you, you can definitely say whatever you please in this place.

POLICE: Has the Organization gone that far? That far?

MAN: (Placing his two hands on the table) Like this?

POLICE: From having almost total control of the Foundation.

MAN: That’s exactly what I’ve wondered all these years.

POLICEMAN: (Apprehensive) It’s something I had hoped to do for years, you know what I mean? I could never get strong enough to make her happy.

MAN: Doesn’t it seem like we’ve had this conversation a million times?

POLICE: Yes. I was just waiting for you to be honest this time.

MAN: You want to know if it was me? (Leaning his back against the chair again) No, it wasn’t me who sent your daughter away. Yes, maybe we were enemies, but I didn’t manage to do it myself… and thank God it wasn’t like that.

POLICE: (Surprised) And why this “Thank God”?

MAN: After all, she was my half-sister, wasn’t she? Or do you think I’m heartless?

POLICE: That’s what I’ve been trying to find out with all the interrogations I’ve been asking you.

MAN: You know they’re coming for me, don’t you?

POLICE: I’m not stupid like you think I am. I heard the noises outside.

MAN: I did it! Yes! (Shouts) I did it! (Sitting up he looks up at the ceiling turning his head 90° while stretching out both arms)

POLICE: And why didn’t you tell me earlier so I could enjoy it a little more, or at least ask you for the details?

MAN: (Euphoric) It wasn’t easy for me. It was constant pressure. Despite all the bad things my father did, I think I would have forgiven him later. But things happen and there’s no turning back, don’t you know that from experience?

(The resigned and sad-faced POLICEMAN bows his head, kissing a key ring that reminds him of his beloved and his daughter. Then they both get up from their seats, slowly walk towards each other and embrace knowing of the imminent kidnapping of the MAN and the imminent killing of the POLICEMAN by the Quasar Organization).
